What’s “Talking White”?

I love her point of view. She explains it’s wrong for any race other than “White” to say speaking proper English is “talking White.” And she speaks perfect English while at it… Love  her!

She is correct. It is slang and their right to use of course but why do it? I say to hell with fitting in stand out and use the intelligence given to you. There’s nothing wrong with proper grammar.

Is that even correct? I mean do people frown on proper English?
I think is more about disguising the level of intelligence. I mean who wants to sound like they standout? Not that is frowned upon but misunderstood is the correct term. If I know that if someone comes off to be at another level, it makes them unapproachable unless your on that level.

Oh Vito! The short answer is yes! Black people make fun of other black people if they speak properly by saying, Why you gotta be actin’ white?

I’m personally tired of hearing about blank race vs the white race. We all have the same opportunity to learn, make money and evolve in society. The people that keeps on bringing this subject up are the ones with the issue. Just saying.

Before I heard her comment, my thought was, if you want to make your living in a white world, you should speak their language. If you want to make your living in the black world, speaking Ebonics might serve you better. However. I think she ” NAILED IT ” . She certainly promotes an inclusive viewpoint.

Good for you! I say that to my friends all the time, about how some people just don’t talk like they know anything. Thank you!

That’s right. In fact there are white people as well who don’t speak proper English. So I think it’s safe to say that no English speaking culture has the right to make anyone feel bad that they speak English properly. You should be proud.

Young lady, I commend you! This applies to everyone, not just black or white. Speak properly and you will be respected. Speak – or write, for that matter – as though you never went to school and are proud of that fact, and you lose respect and gravitas.

  12. I agree with her point, but I’m not completely impressed with her tone. If we were in any other country, the African American vernacular would be called a dialect, or “a variety of language whose identity is fixed by a factor other than geography.” Both sides of this argument need a reality check. First, stop calling people sell outs because they speak the standard language of this country. Second, stop looking down on people who do not or are unable to speak standard English. Most of the African Americans I know “code switch,” changing the way they speak based on the circumstances and make use of either the African American vernacular and standard English. Here in America, we as African Americans have a habit of looking down on aspects of our culture that deviate from the standard of our society until it becomes accepted by the majority. Both sides need to calm down. We have so many other things that polarize us as a people. The way we choose to speak should not be one of them.

I agree with her point 100%. Well stated. I have been told several time that I “talk white” and it is a very frustrating thing to hear.
