Taco, a tortoise (Mary, google Red or Yellow Foot Tortoise, as this is not a box turtle) is responding to voices as they relate to food. It is a feed response. As it gets older it will recognize it’s keepers as the providers of food more. I have box turtles that will chase me down in their pen. Not because they love me, but because they know I provide them with tasty treats. I have Russian Tortoises that are very indifferent twords me – they could care less if I have food or not, they just don’t care if I’m around… Russians…. Every Red Foot tort I own will bite my shoe laces as I walk their pens, waiting to be fed. They will run after me.. Yes, run. (I live in coastal NC, a great place for tropical type turtles and tortoises, but not so great for my favorite desert dwellers..)
This takes nothing away from the fact that these critters make great pets! Read up on them and pick one that is suited to your areas environment for decades – yes, decades of entertainment!
