A mother gray whale lifted up her calf, seemingly to help it get a better view of the excited onlookers, and they caught it all on camera. This is simply beautiful!
The gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon frequently approach small tourist boats, seeking the human interaction. While they could easily avoid the people, whose small boats are not allowed to closely approach whales, they actually seem to enjoy making contact.
Laguna San Ignacio is on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja peninsula and is the destination for hundreds of gray whales, who migrate annually to the region from their feeding grounds in the Arctic. Here, where the water is shallow and warm, they give birth to their young. It lies within El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve and is the gray whale’s last undisturbed nursing and breeding ground, largely thanks to an environmental victory in 2000 that stopped the development of an industrial salt plant.

Shes trying to let her calf breathe since its a nursing an breeding ground !!! The whales need to help their babies reach the surface and the tourists are jtaking advantage of it

I agree. It’s one thing to watch then at a respectable distance but getting right up on them and then encouraging the tourists to touch the baby?? Some animals reject their babies after they’ve been touched and have the human scent on them. I don’t think whales are one of them but still…

Being a whale watch skipper for the last 8 years I deeply disagree with this kind of aggressive approach.
In most of the countries this would be considered as an environmental crime.

What scares me is if the whales become in the slightest comfortable with humans, they may not survive the savagery of those who still persist in hunting them; they will be naive about how human beings can, and will, harm them.
