I’ve done this for 40 years with extra fabric softener. In fact, a sweater can stretch too big and I have to wash it to make it smaller.

I have long legs and often have to “lengthen” my pantlegs. I take the pants out of the washer, let the hem lay on the floor, step on the hem (covering the hem with the length of my foot) and, holding the waistband, pull upwards as hard as I can. Then repeat with the other pantleg, Then, I hang them over the shower rod, smooth out any wrinkles and let them air dry. No floods! Works with jeans and knit pants.
